Summary

Stylene is a robust, modular system for stylometry and readability research on the basis of existing techniques for automatic text analysis and machine learning, and the development of a web service that allows researchers in the humanities and social sciences to analyze texts with this system. In this way, the project will make available to researchers recent advances in research on the computational modeling of style and readability.

Background

Stylene consists of an educational demonstration interface and tools for stylometry (authorship attribution and profiling) and readability research for Dutch. The Stylene system consists of a popularization interface for learning to understand stylometric analysis, and web-based interfaces to software for readability and stylometry research aimed at researchers from the humanities and social sciences who don’t want to develop or install such software themselves. Stylene has been created in the context of CLARIN Flanders.

The OpenConvert Tools were created by INL in the OpenConvert project. The OpenConvert tools convert to TEI or FOLiA from a number of input formats (alto, text, word, HTML, ePub). The tools are available as a Java command line tool, a web service and a web application. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, the website currently provides two annotation tools: a simple Tokenizer for TEI files and a modern Dutch part of speech tagger.

CLARIN Vocabulary Service

Summary

The CLARIN Vocabulary Service is a running instance of the OpenSKOS exchange and publication platform for SKOS vocabularies. This OpenSKOS instance currently publishes SKOS versions of three vocabularies:

ISO-639-3 language codes, as published by SIL.
Closed and simple Data Categories from the ISOcat metadata profile.
A manually constructed and curated list of Organizations, based on the CLARIN VLO.

Background

The CLARIN Vocabulary Service is a running instance of the OpenSKOS exchange and publication platform for SKOS vocabularies. OpenSKOS offers several ways to publish SKOS vocabularies (upload SKOS file, harvest from another OpenSKOS instance with OAI-PMH, construct using the RESTful API) and to use vocabularies (search and autocomplete using the API, harvest using OAI-PMH, inspect in the interactive Editor or consult as Linked Data). This CLARIN OpenSKOS instance is hosted by the Meertens Institute. Contents This OpenSKOS instance currently publishes SKOS versions of three vocabularies:

CCR – CLARIN Concept Registry

Summary

The CCR is a concept registry according to the W3C SKOS recommendation. It was chosen by CLARIN to serve as a semantic registry to overcome semantic interoperability issues with CMDI metadata and different annotation tag sets used for linguistic annotation. The CCR is part of the CMDI metadata infrastructure.

Background

The W3C SKOS recommendation, and the OpenSKOS implementation thereof, provides the means for ‘data-sharing, bridging several different fields of knowledge, technology and practice’. According to this model, each concept is assigned a unique administrative identifier, together with information on the status or decision-making process associated with the concept. In addition, concept specifications in the CCR contain linguistic descriptions, such as definitions and examples, and can be associated with a variety of labels.

OpenSONAR: a 500 MW reference corpus

Summary

OpenSoNaR is an online system that allows for analyzing and searching the large scale Dutch reference corpus SoNaR. Due to the size of the corpus (500 million words), accessing the information contained in the dataset has proven to be difficult for less technically inclined researchers. OpenSoNaR facilitates the use of the SoNaR corpus by providing a user-friendly online interface.

Background

SoNaR is a 500-million-word reference corpus of contemporary written Dutch for use in different types of linguistic (incl. lexicographic) and HLT research and the development of applications. The STEVIN funded SoNaR project (2008-2011) built on the results obtained in the D-Coi and Corea projects which were awarded funding in the first call of proposals within the STEVIN programme.
SONAR contains over 500 million words (i.e. word tokens) of full texts from a wide variety of text types including both texts from conventional media and texts from the new media. All texts except for texts from the social media (Twitter, Chat, SMS) have been tokenized, tagged for part of speech and lemmatized, while in the same set the Named Entities have been labelled. All annotations were produced automatically, no manual verification took place.
The SoNaR project was carried out by Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (CCL), Hogeschool Gent (Dept. Vertaalkunde, LT3), Radboud University Nijmegen (CLST), Tilburg University (TiCC/ILK), Twente University (HMI), and Utrecht University (UiL-OTS). It was coordinated by Radboud University.
Due to the size of the SoNaR corpus the number of hits shown in OpenSONAR is limited to 8 million hits. If the results of your query exceeds this limit only the first 8,000,000 hits will be shown.

OpenSONAR is an online application for exploration of and searching in the SoNaR corpus. In the Exploration (Dutch: verken) interface you can look into the corpus distributions, request statistics from sub-corpora, retrieve n-grams from sub-corpora and search for specific documents using the SoNaR document ID. In the Search (Dutch: zoek) interface you can use four different search strategies: simple (simpel), extended (uitgebreid), advanced (geavanceerd) or expert (expert).

RemBench - a Digital Workbench for Rembrandt Research

Summary

RemBench enables one to search and browse for works of art, artists, primary sources and library sources related to Rembrandt, using faceted search by location, author/artist name, author/artist type, and date range, and/or by both exact and fuzzy keyword search. It offers both a web application and a RESTful web service.

Background

RemBench combines the content of four different databases behind one search interface:

RKDartists and RKDimages, two databases maintained by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD)
RemDoc, a collection of original documents related to Rembrandt van Rijn from the period between 1475 to circa 1750
RUQuest, a library system that provides access to full text articles, as well as the complete collection of (e-)books and journals from the Radboud University Library Catalogue

TTNWW - TST Tools voor het Nederlands als Webservices in een Workflow

Summary

TTNWW integrates and makes available existing Language Technology (LT) software components for the Dutch language that have been developed in the STEVIN and CGN projects. The LT components (for text and speech) are made available as web-services in a simplified workflow system that enables researchers without much technical background to use standard LT workflow recipes.

Background

The web services are available in two separate domains: "Text" and "Speech" processing. For "Text", workflows for the following functionality is offered by TTNWW:

Orthographic Normalisation using TICCLops (version CLARIN-NL 1.0)
Part of Speech Tagging, Lemmatisation, Chunking, limited Multiword Unit Recognition, and Grammatical Relation Assignment by Frog (Version 012.012)
Syntactic Parsing (including grammatical relation assignment, limited named entity recognition, and limited multiword unit recognition) by the Alpino Parser (version 1.3)
Semantic Annotation
Named Entity Recognition
Co-reference Assignment

For "Speech", the following workflows are offered:

Automatic Transcription of speech files using a Netherlands Dutch acoustic model
Automatic Transcription of speech files using a Flemish Dutch acoustic model
Conversion of the input speech file to the required sampling rate, followed by automatic transcription

The TTNWW services have been created in a Dutch and Flemish collaboration project building on the results of past Dutch and Flemish projects. The web services are partly deployed in the SURF-SARA BiG-Grid cloud or at CLARIN centres in the Netherlands and at CLARIN VL University partners.

The architecture of the TTNWW portal consists out of several components and follows the principles of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). The TTNWW GUI front-end is a Flex module that communicates with the TTNWW web-application which keeps track of the different sessions and knows which LT recipes are available. TTNWW communicates assigments (workflow specifications) to the WorkflowService that evaluates the requested workflow and requests the DeploymentSevice to start the required LT web-services. After initialization of the LT web-services, the workflow specification is sent to the Taverna Server, that takes further care of the workflow.

To facilitate the process of wrapping applications that were originally designed as standalone applications into web services, the CLAM (Computational Linguistics Application Mediator) wrapper software allows for easy and transparent transformation of applications into RESTful web services. The CLAM software has extensively been used in the TTNWW project for both text and speech processing tools. With the exception of Alpino and MBSRL all web services work operate on CLAM wrappers.

Given the number of web services involved in the TTNWW project and possibilities offered by the cloud environment the preferred method of delivering the web service installations was delivery of complete virtual machine images by the LT providers. These could be directly uploaded into the cloud environment and thus relieving the CLARIN centres nd LT providers from the original foreseen task of running the webservices themselves. A potential advantage of this method, that has not been exploited in the project yet, is that these images may be also be delivered directly to the end user so these can be run in a local configuration using virtualization software such as VMWare of VirtualBox.

The workflow engine used in the project was Taverna. But build on top of this was a a number of selectable task recipes, following a task oriented approach in line with the premises that users with no or little technical expertise should be able to use the system. In this context, tasks are understood in terms of end results of processes such as semantic role labelling, pos tagging or syntactic analysis and ready-made workflows are constructed that can be readily used by the end user. Summary

This service is no longer operational! The ISO TC37 Data Category Registry (DCR) was created in 2008 as one of the first ISO standards delivered in the form of a database (ISOcat). The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI) has provided development, hosting, and support services and acted as the Registration Authority (RA) until December 2014. For users from the European CLARIN research infrastructure, the Meertens Institute develops and hosts a new registry for CLARIN relevant concepts based on the corresponding ISOcat data categories, such as those used for the Component MetaData Infrastructure (CMDI). This can be found here: http://portal.clarin.nl/node/4216.

Background

ISO 12620 provides a framework for defining data categories compliant with the ISO/IEC 11179 family of standards. According to this model, each data category is assigned a unique administrative identifier, together with information on the status or decision-making process associated with the data category. In addition, data category specifications in the DCR contain linguistic descriptions, such as data category definitions, statements of associated value domains, and examples. Data category specifications can be associated with a variety of data element names and with language-specific versions of definitions, names, value domains and other attributes. For now the entries of the Data Category Registry are still available in a static manner, i.e., can't be changed anymore. All Data Category Peristent IDentifiers, e.g., http://www.isocat.org/datcat/DC-4146, remain resolvable. The public part of the registry can be browsed via the Guest workspace: http://www.isocat.org/rest/user/guest/workspace

NameScape: Mapping the Landscape of Names in Modern Dutch Literature

Summary

Searching and visualizing Named Entities in modern Dutch novels.

Background

The named entity (NE) tagging and resolution in NameScape enables quantitative and repeatable research where previously only guesswork and anecdotal evidence was feasible. The visualisation module enables researchers with a less technical background to draw conclusions about functions of names in literary work and help them to explore the material in search of more interesting questions (and answers). Users from other communities (sociolinguistics, sentiment analysis, …) also benefit from the NE tagged data, especially since the NE recognizer is available as a web service, enabling researchers to annotate their own research data. Datasets in NameScape (total of 1.129 books):

Corpus Sanders: A corpus of 582 Dutch novels written and published between 1970 and 2009 will.
Corpus Huygens: Consists of 22 novels manually tagged with detailed named entity information. IPR for this corpus do not allow distribution.
Corpus eBooks: Consists of 7000+ Dutch eBooks tagged automatically with basic NER features and person name Part information. IPR for this corpus do not allow distribution.
Corpus SoNaR Books: 105 Dutch books; NE tagged.
Corpus Gutenberg Dutch: Consists of 530 NE tagged TEI files converted from the Epub versions of the corresponding Gutenberg documents.

TDS: Typological Database System

Summary

The Typological Database System (TDS) is a web-based service that provides integrated access to a collection of independently developed typological databases. Unified querying is supported with the help of an integrated ontology. The component databases of the TDS are cross-linguistic databases, developed for research in language typology and linguistics. Together they contain some 1200 different descriptive properties, with information about more than 1000 languages. (Because of the heterogeneous nature of the collection, most properties are only filled for a fraction of the languages). Most of the data is in the form of high-level "analytical" properties, but there are also a few collections of example sentences (with glosses) illustrating particular phenomena.

Background

Language typology, the study of the range of language variation and universals, is a data-intensive discipline that increasingly relies on electronic databases. Improved availability of the data collected in the TDS enhances its potential to support linguistic research. The TDS can be used to help answer questions such as "which languages have the basic word order Verb-Object-Subject", "what kind of phonological stress systems are common" "are languages with subject-verb agreement more likely to allow null subjects than languages without it" etc. The system is not an oracle: In all cases, only partial information is returned, as collected and deposited in the system by the creators of the component databases. But this information can be invaluable to other researchers, either as a complete answer to a specific question or as the starting point for further research. Given that the collected data represents linguistic analysis and often novel theoretical approaches, it is impossible to map it to a single "consensus" standard. While in some limited cases it is possible to completely reconcile data from different sources, the system places a premium on preserving the theoretical orientations and analyses of the component databases, which are presented side by side as alternative datasets in the same topical group.

The TDS project was carried out by a research group of the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT), with members representing the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, Radboud University Nijmegen, and Utrecht University. It was developed with support from NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) grant 380-30-004 / INV-03-12 and from participating universities. The initial phase of the project was started in September 2000, and the project entered the implementation phase on 1 May 2004. Originally scheduled to run for three years, it was extended until 31 December 2007. The TDS server and data collections continued to be augmented until 2009. While the original TDS web server is still operational, web technologies evolve rapidly. The system had begun to show its age even before the end of the project in 2009, motivating migration of the data collection to an archival platform. But due to the complexity and diversity of the component databases, the data cannot be usefully navigated without specialized supporting software; useful archiving necessitates a software access point alongside the static data. Under the "TDS Curator" project, supported by a CLARIN-NL Call 1 grant, the TDS has migrated to a new platform, hosted by the Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS), that conforms to CLARIN infrastructural requirements. Both versions of the system remain in operation.
