LAISEANG: Language Archive of Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea

Summary

The LAISEANG corpus contains an unrivaled collection of multimedia materials and written documents from over 50 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea.

Background

The geographical region of insular South East Asia and New Guinea is well-known as an area of mega-biodiversity. Less well-known is the extreme linguistic diversity in this area: over a quarter of the world’s 6000 languages are spoken here. As small minority languages, most of these will cease to be spoken in the coming few generations. The LAISEANG corpus ensures the preservation of unique records of languages and the cultures encapsulated by them in the region. The language resources have been gathered by twenty linguists at, or in collaboration with Dutch universities over the last 40 years, and are compiled and archived in collaboration with The Language Archive (TLA) in Nijmegen. The resulting archive constitutes an unrivaled collection of multimedia materials and written documents from over 50 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea. Through the archive, future speaker communities and researchers are able to plumb the materials for answers to their own questions, even if they do not themselves know the language, and even if the language dies.

VU-DNC: VU Diachronic Newspaper Corpus

Summary

VU-DNC is a unique diachronic corpus of Dutch newspaper articles from five major Dutch newspapers from 1950/1951 and 2002 (2 MW). The VU-DNC has been annotated for quotations, which enables the researcher to differentiate between the words directly under responsibility of the journalist.

Background

VU-DNC contains two news subcorpora, one containing old newspaper texts from 1950 and 1951 from five major national Dutch newspapers, and one containing new newspaper texts from 2002 from the same five newspapers. The articles originate from the front page, domestic news, foreign news, financial news, culture, opinion, sports, and science sections from Algemeen Dagblad, NRC Handelsblad, de Telegraaf, Trouw and de Volkskrant (1950/1: 931,574 words, 3615 texts; 2002: 971,059 words, 3003 texts). The texts from 1950 and 1951 were scanned, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), from original paper copies; the 2002 texts were extracted from the international newspaper database LexisNexis.
The VU-DNC has been developed at the Department of Language and Communication, Faculty of Arts, of the VU University, under supervision of prof.dr. Wilbert Spooren, an accomplished researcher in discourse studies, with many years of experience in using and compiling corpora, such as the VU-chat-corpus. Kirsten Vis was responsible for the compilation of the VU-DNC, from the design and compilation criteria to the actual realization of the corpus.
The VU-DNC makes it possible to address a variety of research questions on diachronic change. From a historical perspective, developments over time within and between the five major newspapers can be better addressed, e.g. were the differences between the type of news events the major newspapers reported on greater in the more segregated society of the 1950s than they are now? From the perspective of communication and media studies, research questions into the diachronic changes in journalistic practice can be better addressed, for example questions regarding the framing of the news: do journalists nowadays use different framing devices than in 1950? From a (historical) linguistic perspective, research questions can be answered that address the recent linguistic developments in Dutch news, varied over type of article or section and/or newspaper. For example: has the language use in newspapers become more subjective, is there a difference in this development between hard news texts and other types of texts, and is it stronger in popular newspapers than in so-called ‘serious’ newspapers?

C-DSD: Curating the Dutch Song Database

Summary

The Dutch Song Database (Nederlandse Liederenbank in Dutch) contains more than 150,000 songs in the Dutch and Flemish language, from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. It contains love songs, satirical songs, Beggar songs, psalms and other religious songs, folksongs, children's songs, St Nicholas and Christmas songs, and so on and so forth. The main sources for all these songs are songbooks, songsheets (broadsides), song manuscripts and fieldwork recordings. For every song the source is indicated where the text and/or the melody can be found. In some cases one can click directly to the complete text, or to the music, or to a recording.
The Dutch Song Database was compiled at the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam and is maintained and developed further by its Centre for Documentation and Research of Dutch Songs, in cooperation with several partners.

Background

In the Dutch Song Database (DSD) four different datasets are integrated into a database in the field of Literary Studies. It contains (meta-)data on 140.000 songs and their 15.000 sources (songbooks, pamphlets, field recordings, etc.) from the Middle Ages to the present day. Built and rebuilt over a period of 25 years, consisting of four distinct datasets, this database was enlarged and enriched in many stages, with grants from (among others) NWO and OCW. The first online version of the DSD was published in 2007. The ratio behind the analysis of data and the production of metadata in the DSD is internationally renowned and perceived as exemplary.

The first version of the DSD was built in the late 1980’s for research purposes at the University of Utrecht (Phd thesis L.P. Grijp, 1991). It was called ‘Voetenbank’ (‘Feetbank’) because of the many stanza forms described in it. At the Meertens Institute it was rebuilt into a relational database in Filemaker Pro in 1996, renamed into DSD, and all kinds of metadatasets and data sources (audio, image, symbolic music notation) into the database were included in the years following. A webinterface (www.liederenbank.nl) using MySQL & PHP was built in 2007 and is used for online searching only - the Filemaker Pro db was maintained as the main entry tool. In C-DSD an extra layer of CMDI files was added, which were the basis for generating Dublin Core metadata.

D-LUCEA: Database of the Longitudinal Utrecht Collection of English Accents

Summary

The LUCEA database is a database of existing speech recordings of L1 and L2 speakers of English. The recorded speakers are students from an international student community where English is used as lingua franca. These students are being recorded longitudinally throughout their 3-year period on campus, using read and spontaneous speech in L1 and in L2 English (or in L1 English only). The database is of interest for research and development in linguistics, language education (pronunciation training), speech technology (foreign accent detection, language recognition, speech recognition), and sociophonetics.

Background

The LUCEA Database consists of speech recordings of students at the University College Utrecht (UCU), the international honours college of Utrecht University, the Netherlands. At UCU, English is the language of instruction and also the social lingua franca. So far, 72 (cohort 2010) and about 70 (cohort 2011) students have been recruited, as well as 17 exchange students who are native speakers of English. All speaker groups are about 70% female and 30% male. For the 2010 students, 3 recordings are available. For the 2011 students and for the exchange students, 1 recording is available.

Each recording consists of approx 20 minutes of speech, half of which is read (English read texts and sentences, and L1 read text for 2011 cohort) and half of which is spontaneous (2 minutes English monologue on informal topic, 2m monologue in L1 on informal topic, 2m English monologue on formal topic, 3m English conversation with interviewer). Each recording is made using a strict protocol describing the exact location of microphones, speakers’ instructions, recording procedure, etc.
The speech recordings are not yet annotated nor transcribed. The transcripts of the read texts are available in PDF. The metadata scheme developed in this project allows future additions of annotations.

The recordings are part of the larger and ongoing LUCEA project in which the recruited students are being followed throughout their 3-year period on the UCU campus. This will result in about 900 recording sessions. At present, about 280 [(72+65+55) + (~70) + (17)] recordings are available.

VALID - vulnerability in language acquisition: language impairments in Dutch

Summary

An open access multimedia archive of language pathology data collected in the Netherlands, primarily on Dutch, audio files and transcripts. Currently, this corpus contains 5 different data sets. In the VALID data archive old, current and future data can be brought together.

Background

VALID, an open access multimedia language data archive, facilitates and promotes innovative research in the area of language impairment. There are a number of compelling reasons for exchanging and sharing this kind of data. Obviously, in a small country like the Netherlands a considerably smaller amount of language data is being collected than in much larger regions, especially so with respect to language disorders, a highly specific research domain. The combination of a wide range of language impairments in one data archive not only enhances the study of similar impairments but also advances comparisons between different disorders. Moreover, the inclusion of different age groups allows for quasi-longitudinal research designs. Finally, analysis of task properties and effects that are specific to pathological language groups can make a significant contribution to evidence-based research.

The following data sets define the launching platform for the VALID data archive, together with the BISLI data set that is currently being curated (FESLI):

The SLI RU-Kentalis database: the expression of spatial relations by children with SLI and normally developing children in their spoken language production
The UU SLI-Dyslexia project database: early language development in children at familial risk of dyslexia
The bilingual deaf children RU-Kentalis database: the bilingual language and communication development of young deaf children in Sign Language of the Netherlands (SLN) and Dutch (D)
The ADHD and SLI corpus UvA database: the language and executive functioning profiles of children with ADHD and children with SLI and TD children
The deaf adults RU database: the acquisition of morphosyntactic aspects of Dutch by deaf Dutch adults (late L1/early L2) and hearing Turkish and Moroccan-Arabic L2-learners of Dutch (late L2).

For all data sets concerned, written informed consent from the participants or their caretakers has been obtained. IPNV - Interview Project Dutch Veterans

Summary

The IPNV data set contains the public part of a collection of interviews collected by the Dutch Veteran Institute. They contain stories covering almost all conflicts and military missions where the Netherlands were involved. The public part of this collection of about 500 interviews was made available via the internet the non-public part. For CLARIN the data was curated by the DCS (http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1963) in May 2013.

Background

The IPNV Corpus is a corpus originally compiled by the Veteraneninstituut (VI). It comprises a collection of more than 1100 (recorded) interviews with veterans who were involved in wars and other military actions that the Dutch military forces took part in. The average duration of an interview is 2.5 hours. Most interviews are with veterans of World War II, the decolonization wars with Indonesia and New Guinea, the UN action in Korea, the UN observe mission in Lebanon, UN missions in Cambodia and former Yugoslavia, and the NATO missions in Iraq and Aghanistan. Some 100 interviews are with veterans who were involved in small-scale observation, monitoring and humanitarian missions. In the INTER-VIEWs project (http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1915) 246 of the interviews were curated: the audio recordings (in WAV format) of the interviews were transferred to DANS and the metadata were made available in CMDI/ISOcat format. The data and metadata can be accessed through the EASY system.

DBD - Dutch Bilingualism Database, TCULT - Talen en Culturen in Utrechtse Lombok en Transvaal

Summary

The CLARIN NL supported data sets are part of an already existing collection: Dutch Bilingualism Database housed at the MPI for Psycholinguistics that are both also CLARIN compatible. The addtional DBD / TCULT data were curated by the CLARIN DCS (http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1963) and delivered in February 2014.

Background

The original DBD data was collected, curated and digitised in a project led by Pieter Muysken from 2003-2008 and stored at the MPI for Psycholinguistics. The DBD is a rather substantial collection of data (over 1,500 sessions) from a number of projects and research programmes that were directed at investigating multilingualism and comprises data originating from Dutch, Sranan, Sarnami, Papiamentu, Arabic, Berber and 1Turkish speakers . At the basis of the collection is the research project TCULT[1] (1998-2002) in which intercultural language contacts in the Dutch city of Utrecht were studied. DBD established a first curation of the TCULT data and added many more bilingual data sets collected in the period 1985 – 2005.
