DSS: Dutch Ships and Sailors

Summary

A tool chain and methodology for converting legacy datasets in the area of maritime history. Set up to facilitate over 25 data sets, the initial population consists of 4 selected maritime-historical datasets.

Background

The maritime industry has been central to regional and global economic, social and cultural exchange. It is also one of the best historically documented sectors of human activity. Many aspects of it have been recorded by shipping companies, governments, newspapers and other institutions. In the past few decades, much of the data in the preserved historical source material has been digitized. Among the most interesting data are those on shipping movement and crew members. The Dutch Republic in the 17th and 18th centuries had to rely to a large extent on immigration to man its fleet. Especially in Asian waters, it also relied on Asian crews.

Often information that deals with the same shipping movements and crew composition is spread over several historical sources and hence over several databases. The data often refers to the same ‘places’, ‘ships’, ‘persons’ and ‘events’. By linking the different available databases, the data complements and amplifies each other, and new research possibilities open up. Ideally, we would want to follow a ship from port to port, and crew members pursuing their careers from ship to ship.

The Dutch Ships and Sailors project provides a tool chain and methodology for converting legacy datasets. The infrastructure includes common vocabularies to normalize and enrich existing data. Links are established between the datasets and to other relevant datasets. In doing so, Dutch Ships and Sailors builds a (semantic) web-based structure that aims to function as a future platform and infrastructure for maritime historical datasets. Initially, this portal contains the following datasets:

Historische Kranten of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek;
The Monsterrollen databases contains elaborate data on the crew composition of ships from the Northern Netherlands (c. 1800-1930) and provides information on the sailors involved, such as the places of origin, wage and age;
The databases VOC Opvarenden, providing extensive data on crews of VOC ships leaving the Republic;
The database Dutch-Asiatic Shipping, providing data on all inter-continental voyages of VOC ships;
The database Generale Zeemonsterrollen, providing data on the crew composition and sometimes location of VOC ships stationed in Asia and not engaged in inter-continental shipping.

INTER-VIEWs: Curation of Interview Data

Summary

A corpus of 250 interviews from the Living Oral History Workbench enriched with commentary in the Oral History Annotation tool, developed by the Centre for Language and Speech Technology (CLST) at the Radboud University Nijmegen.

Background

Interview data can be used in a number of ways, such as comparative research, restudy or follow-up study, re-analysis / secondary analysis, research design and methodological advancement, replication and validation of published work, and for teaching and learning. Recent experiences with the re-use of interview data show that there is an enormous potential for this type of data. Especially in the field of interview data related to the Second World War and other military conflicts multidisciplinary research is carried out. This corpus consists of (about) 30 interviews that are fully transcribed from the Veteran Tapes VP project, and 250 interviews resulting from the Living Oral History Workbench project:
- 120 World War II interviews presenting a range of experiences and frames of reference of Dutch soldiers between 1935-1945.
- 100 interviews with veterans of the Dutch East Indies. This collection exhibits a large diversity in experiences at the local level in guerilla warfare.
- 30 interviews with veterans of New Guinea. This is a relatively unknown conflict with very interesting elements (soldiers left in uncertainty and isolation, and the pressure of the international community to decolonize the area). Each interview lasts between 1 and 1.5 hours.

LAISEANG: Language Archive of Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea

Summary

The LAISEANG corpus contains an unrivaled collection of multimedia materials and written documents from over 50 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea.

Background

The geographical region of insular South East Asia and New Guinea is well-known as an area of mega-biodiversity. Less well-known is the extreme linguistic diversity in this area: over a quarter of the world’s 6000 languages are spoken here. As small minority languages, most of these will cease to be spoken in the coming few generations. The LAISEANG corpus ensures the preservation of unique records of languages and the cultures encapsulated by them in the region. The language resources have been gathered by twenty linguists at, or in collaboration with Dutch universities over the last 40 years, and are compiled and archived in collaboration with The Language Archive (TLA) in Nijmegen. The resulting archive constitutes an unrivaled collection of multimedia materials and written documents from over 50 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea. Through the archive, future speaker communities and researchers are able to plumb the materials for answers to their own questions, even if they do not themselves know the language, and even if the language dies.

EMIT-X: Early-Modern Image and Text eXchange

Summary

Data and metadata from the Emblem Project Utrecht (EPU) on an experimental OAI data provider, facilitating sharing and re-use. The EPU-project created a collection of 27 books of love emblems. The Emblem Project Utrecht is a partner in the 'Open Emblem' Initiative which coordinates the emblem metadata integration efforts being done in individual emblem digitisation projects.

Background

In the Netherlands, the Emblem Project Utrecht (EPU, supported by NWO/KNAW) created a collection of 27 books of love emblems, a Dutch invention that became very popular all over Europe during the Early-Modern period. Because of its wide geographical and linguistic dispersion, however, study of the emblem requires access not just to the books of a single national tradition (e.g. the Dutch), but also to the emblem books published in other European countries. As early as 2001 the first symposia were held about the possibilities of creating a single European portal for emblem studies. The Utrecht project has been actively participating in international efforts promoting digital emblem interoperability. For the international Society for Emblem Studies (SES, http://www.emblems.arts.gla.ac.uk/SES/) the subject of digital collections and collection exchange has been a recurrent topic. Among the joint research questions driving these efforts were the need to study emblems comparatively (over national cultures), to trace the transmission of textual and pictorial motifs, and to study the adaptation of foreign emblem books in local contexts. The Open Emblem Group established by the Society coordinates the efforts.

In EMIT-X two harvestable collections of data were created: the project’s metadata, which describe the emblem’s data structure, harvested for the CMDI, and the projects emblem data (texts of the emblems and associated indexing), harvested by emblem researchers at the OpenEmblem portal and elsewhere. Emblem researchers in the Netherlands and elsewhere are able to search across collections and boundaries. Because EMIT-X also makes available the relevant metadata descriptions in the CLARIN infrastructure, EMIT-X also paved the way for European partner-projects to make their data available in the CLARIN infrastructure. The participation in EMIT-X (at-a-distance) of the international advisory partners guaranteed that the choices made fit within the proposed international collaboration.

C-DSD: Curating the Dutch Song Database

Summary

The Dutch Song Database (Nederlandse Liederenbank in Dutch) contains more than 150,000 songs in the Dutch and Flemish language, from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. It contains love songs, satirical songs, Beggar songs, psalms and other religious songs, folksongs, children's songs, St Nicholas and Christmas songs, and so on and so forth. The main sources for all these songs are songbooks, songsheets (broadsides), song manuscripts and fieldwork recordings. For every song the source is indicated where the text and/or the melody can be found. In some cases one can click directly to the complete text, or to the music, or to a recording.
The Dutch Song Database was compiled at the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam and is maintained and developed further by its Centre for Documentation and Research of Dutch Songs, in cooperation with several partners.

Background

In the Dutch Song Database (DSD) four different datasets are integrated into a database in the field of Literary Studies. It contains (meta-)data on 140.000 songs and their 15.000 sources (songbooks, pamphlets, field recordings, etc.) from the Middle Ages to the present day. Built and rebuilt over a period of 25 years, consisting of four distinct datasets, this database was enlarged and enriched in many stages, with grants from (among others) NWO and OCW. The first online version of the DSD was published in 2007. The ratio behind the analysis of data and the production of metadata in the DSD is internationally renowned and perceived as exemplary.

The first version of the DSD was built in the late 1980’s for research purposes at the University of Utrecht (Phd thesis L.P. Grijp, 1991). It was called ‘Voetenbank’ (‘Feetbank’) because of the many stanza forms described in it. At the Meertens Institute it was rebuilt into a relational database in Filemaker Pro in 1996, renamed into DSD, and all kinds of metadatasets and data sources (audio, image, symbolic music notation) into the database were included in the years following. A webinterface (www.liederenbank.nl) using MySQL & PHP was built in 2007 and is used for online searching only - the Filemaker Pro db was maintained as the main entry tool. In C-DSD an extra layer of CMDI files was added, which were the basis for generating Dublin Core metadata.

ColTime: Collaboration on Time-Based Resources

Summary

An extension of ELAN and ANNEX for the annotation and display of time‐based resources such as audio and video with a referencing and note exchanging system.

Background

Reference to resources is typically only possible at the metadata session level, but not at the level of a time slice of a larger audio-visual document, let alone at the level of individual annotations. ColTime reduces the granularity of unique references from the document level to the annotation level. As a test case, ColTime's developers focused primarily on online and offline sign language corpora containing annotated video files (EAF document format), but the same technology can be exploited for any type of research that uses audio. ColTime lead to:

The generation of a link reference to sub‐segments of annotation documents in the online browser ANNEX or the offline annotation tool ELAN; the former including a persistent identifier to a document published in a standard archive, the latter including a reference to a document in for instance a sharable Dropbox environment. Units that will be referred to include plain time slices in the media file, and parts of annotation documents such as tiers and individual annotations.
Standardization of the ANNEX visualization service such that it (a) can process PIDs and part identifiers in a standardized way and (b) can be configured as a persistent service as is appropriate for a service that is to be referenced from publications.
The adaptation of the visualisation service of ANNEX for specific purposes as showing examples and counterexamples side by side.
An online service that allows for the creation, search, and exchange of notes that include the type of links mentioned above. The notes receive ISOcat‐based metadata in terms of properties such as author, date, type, purpose, status, and addressee.
Interaction between the note system and ELAN and ANNEX, so that notes can be created, searched for, and modified from within these tools.
Interaction of the above system with (a) mail and existing social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and (b) cloud services such as Dropbox, so as to allow for collaboration on resources that are not yet archived.

EXILSEA: Exploiting ISOcat's Language Sections in ELAN and ANNEX

Summary

Enhancements of the multimedia annotation tool ELAN and the accompanying ANNEX browser for users of different languages with the multilingual features of ISOCAT.

Background

The CLARIN data category system ISOcat offers the possibility to create multiple language sections for names, definitions and descriptions of data categories, English being the only obligatory language. The use of these multilingual functions in ISOcat for the creation of multilingual versions of the corpus metadata and annotations will only be a solution if the tools to annotate multimodal data and to visualise those annotations actually exploit the multilingual features. EXILSEA enhances the multimedia annotation tool ELAN and the accompanying ANNEX browser for this purpose.
This new functionality is being demonstrated for the Corpus NGT (for Sign Language of the Netherlands), which is originally glossed, translated, and annotated in Dutch. Its existing IMDI metadata has been updated to CLARIN-standard CMDI descriptions using bilingual ISOcat categories, and has likewise standardised the Controlled Vocabularies in the annotation files by using references to bilingual ISOcat categories.

SignLinC: Linking lexical databases and annotated corpora of signed

Summary

The core of SignLinC consists of enhancements for LEXUS 3.0 and ELAN 4.0, both released at the start of 2011.

Background

Additions to ELAN include the following:

Addition of a "Lexicon" tab at the top right of the interface. Annotations on a gloss tier can be looked up in a LEXUS lexicon. The user can select which fields from LEXUS to display in the Lexicon tab. (li)The possibility of creating a link to an 'external controlled vocabulary' that is published on a web server, and that can be modified independently of specific EAF files. Displaying and browsing a very long list of items in the pop-up menu that appears when creating an annotation on a tier that is linked to an External Controlled Vocabulary (ECV) is optimised by a number of preference options. At this moment it is not yet possible to generate an ECV from within LEXUS, but this will likely be included in future releases of LEXUS.

ANNEX, the online sibling of ELAN, has been modified independently of the project to allow the creation of URL-style links to segments of annotation files on a server. These links can be included on web pages, power-point presentations, or PDF files. In this way, quick access to published annotations is possible from within lexical resources.

SignLinC links two independently evolved data sets for a signed language: the Corpus NGT and the lexical database of the Dutch Sign Centre. The first is a corpus of video texts that was already fully compliant with CLARIN standards, while the latter is an independently evolved Microsoft SQL database. Both are prototypical for the situation of signed language resources in the world: corpora of running signing have only recently been under development and typically use ELAN as the annotation tool, while lexical databases have typically evolved as standalone applications to produce dictionaries in books or on CD/DVD-ROMs. In order to establish a link in both directions, a conversion of relevant parts of the lexical database to the CLARIN LMF standard for lexica was created for a small test set of lemmata.
The SignLinC project was a collaboration between Radboud University, the Dutch Sign Centre (NGc), and the MPI for Psycholinguistics; it was funded by CLARIN-NL and was completed in 2011.
