Title

Polimedia: Interlinking multimedia for the analysis of media coverage of political debates

Description

PoliMedia links the minutes of the debates in the Dutch Parliament (Dutch Hansard) to the databases of historical newspapers and ANP radio bulletins to allow cross-media analysis of coverage in a uniform search interface. For each fragment from a single speaker in a debate, the developers extracted relevant information: the speaker, the date, important terms from its content and important terms from the description of the complete debate. This information was then combined to create a query with which they searched the archives of newspapers, radio bulletins and television programmes. Media items that corresponded to this query were retrieved and a link was created between the speech and the media item, creating a Semantic Web of Dutch Hansard and media coverage. This Semantic Web contains links from the Dutch Hansard to newspaper articles and radio bulletins. From evaluations it was found that there was a 62% recall and 75% precision. To navigate this Semantic Web, a search user interface was developed based on a requirements study with five scholars in history and political communication. The developers created a faceted search interface in which the Dutch parliamentary minutes can be searched in full-text and in which refinements can be performed based on the speaker, the role of the speaker (parliament of government), political party and year. These debates are presented with links to the original locations of the media items. Polimedia is a collaboration of the TU Delft and the Free University (development of Semantic Web of Dutch Hansard and media), the Netherlands Institute of Sound and Vision (development of the search user interface) and Erasmus University Rotterdam (projectleader and user research of historians and political communication researchers).

PaQu - Parse and Query

Description

PaQu uses the Alpino parser to make treebanks of your own text corpus, and to search in these treebanks using an interface based on the LASSY Word Relations Search interface (http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1966). Several treebanks are already available in the application, such as: Lassy Klein (1M words, manually checked syntactic analysis) and Lassy Groot (700M words, syntactic analysis automatically assigned by Alpino). PaQu offers two ways to search through the syntactically annotated texts. The first option is to use the search bar to look for word pairs, optionally complemented by their syntactic relationship. The second search option is to use the query language XPath.

Title

OpenSONAR: a 500 MW reference corpus of Contemporary Written Dutch

Description

SoNaR is a 500-million-word reference corpus of contemporary written Dutch for use in different types of linguistic (incl. lexicographic) and HLT research and the development of applications. The STEVIN funded SoNaR project (2008-2011) built on the results obtained in the D-Coi and Corea projects which were awarded funding in the first call of proposals within the STEVIN programme. SONAR contains over 500 million words (i.e. word tokens) of full texts from a wide variety of text types including both texts from conventional media and texts from the new media. All texts except for texts from the social media (Twitter, Chat, SMS) have been tokenized, tagged for part of speech and lemmatized, while in the same set the Named Entities have been labelled. All annotations were produced automatically, no manual verification took place. The texts are enriched with several annotations (Part of Speech and lemma information) and are available as FoLiA xml files (folia.xml). The system relies on BlackLab server as back-end and WhiteLab as user-interface. OpenSONAR is an online application for exploration of and searching in the SoNaR corpus.

Namescape Visualizer

Description

Searching and visualizing Named Entities in modern Dutch novels. The named entity (NE) tagging and resolution in NameScape enables quantitative and repeatable research where previously only guesswork and anecdotal evidence was feasible. The visualisation module enables researchers with a less technical background to draw conclusions about functions of names in literary work and help them to explore the material in search of more interesting questions (and answers). Users from other communities (sociolinguistics, sentiment analysis, …) also benefit from the NE tagged data, especially since the NE recognizer is available as a web service, enabling researchers to annotate their own research data. Datasets in NameScape (total of 1.129 books): Corpus Sanders: A corpus of 582 Dutch novels written and published between 1970 and 2009 will. Corpus Huygens: Consists of 22 novels manually tagged with detailed named entity information. IPR for this corpus do not allow distribution. Corpus eBooks: Consists of 7000+ Dutch eBooks tagged automatically with basic NER features and person name Part information. IPR for this corpus do not allow distribution. Corpus SoNaR Books: 105 Dutch books; NE tagged. Corpus Gutenberg Dutch: Consists of 530 NE tagged TEI files converted from the Epub versions of the corresponding Gutenberg documents. Recent research has conclusively proven names in literary works can only be put fully into perspective when studied in a wider context (landscape) of names either in the same text or in related material (the onymic landscape or “namescape”). Research on large corpora is needed to gain a better understanding of e.g. what is characteristic for a certain period, genre, author or cultural region. The data necessary for research on this scale simply does not exist yet. NameScape aims to fill the need by providing a substantial amount of literary works annotated with a rich tag set, thereby enabling researchers to perform their research in more depth than previously possible. Several exploratory visualization tools help the scholar to answer old questions and uncover many more new ones, which can be addressed using the demonstrator.

MIMORE: Microcomparative Morphosyntax Research Tool

Description

With the MIMORE search engine one can search three databases together, with text strings, part of speech tags and syntactic variables. The researcher can combine categories and features into complex tags or use predefined tags. All categories and features are defined in ISOcat. Since all sentences have a location code, the morphosyntactic phenomena found in a set of sentences resulting from a search can be automatically plotted on a geographic map. It is possible to include more than one morphosyntactic phenomenon in one map, thus visualizing potential correlations between these phenomena. There is also a user-friendly function to export the data to a statistical program. The data in DynaSAND, the dynamic syntactic atlas of the Dutch dialects (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/sand/ (link is external)), were collected between 2000 and 2005 by oral interviews (fieldwork and telephone) in about 300 locations across The Netherlands, Belgium and a small part of north-west France. Dialect speakers were asked to judge and/or translate some 150 test sentences. DynaSAND makes available the full recordings and transcriptions of these interviews. Together, the DynSAND data cover the syntactic variation in the Dutch language area in the left periphery of the clause (the complementizer system and complementizer agreement), variation in subject pronoun form depending on syntactic position, subject pronoun doubling, cliticization on YES/NO, the reflexive system, fronting constructions (Wh-clauses, relative clauses, topicalization), word order and morphological variation in verb clusters, negation and quantification. The data in DiDDD (Diversity in Dutch DP Design; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/diddd/ (link is external)) were collected between 2005 and 2009 with oral and written interviews in about 200 locations in the Dutch language area, with a methodology highly parallel to DynaSAND. The data involve translations of and judgements on test sentences. For 29 interviews there are sound recordings which have been lined up with their transcriptions. The DIDDD data cover the morphosyntactic variation within nominal groups, in particular possessives, partitives, noun ellipsis, the demonstrative system, the numeral modification system, what-for constructions, quantitative er, adjectival inflection, negation and exclamatives. The data in GTRP (Goeman, Taeldeman, van Reenen Project; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/mand/database/ (link is external)) were collected between 1979 and 2000 with oral interviews in about 600 locations in the Dutch language area. Informants were asked to translate words or short sentences. Part of the transcriptions have been lined up with the sound recordings. The morphological data in GTRP include plural forms of nouns, diminutives, gender on nouns and adjectives, comparatives, superlatives, verbal inflection including participles, subject, object and possessive pronouns.

LASSY Word Relations Search Web Application

Description

The LASSY word relations web application makes it possible to search for sentences that contain pairs of words between which there is a grammatical relation. One can search in the Dutch LASSY-SMALL Treebank (1 million tokens), in which the syntactic parse of each sentence has been manually verified, and in (a part of) the LASSY-LARGE Treebank (700 million tokens ),in which the syntactic parse of each sentence has been added by the automatic parser Alpino. One can restrict the query to search for words of a particular Part-of-Speech, which is very useful in the case of syntactic ambiguities. One can also leave out the string of the word, so that one can obtain e.g. a list of sentences in which any adverb modifies a given verb, or even any word modifies a given verb. On the page that lists the found sentences one can view the exact syntactic structure of each sentence by a simple click. The application also provides detailed frequency information of all found sentences and word pairs. The Lassy treebanks have been made by the KU Leuven and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen through financing of the Dutch Language Union. One can obtain these treebanks through the HLT Agency (TST-Centrale).
