Title

Web-based Annotation Explorer

Description

Annex (Annotation Explorer) is a web-based tool for exploring and viewing annotated multimedia recordings in an archive. ANNEX can play audio and video files in a web browser along with annotations in a variety of formats: ELAN (EAF), Shoebox/Toolbox text, CHAT (CHILDES annotation format), Plain text, CSV, PDF, SubRip, Praat TextGrid, HTML and XML. Annex will visualise the annotations in synchrony with the media files as long as time-alignment information is available. If no time-alignment information is available, a default segment duration is assumed. Annex has a graphical interface that resembles the interface of the ELAN annotation tool to some extent, with a number of different view modes such as subtitle view, timeline view and grid view. Annex runs in any modern web browser with the Adobe Flash plugin (> version 10) installed. ANNEX has been functionally extended with the help of the following CLARIN-NL-funded projects: - ColTime: Collaboration on Time-Based Resources. - EXILSEA: Exploiting ISOcat's Language Sections in ELAN and ANNEX. - MultiCon: Multilayer Concordance Functions in ELAN and ANNEX. - SignLinC: Linking lexical databases and annotated corpora of signed languages. Over the years, many funders have contributed to the development of ANNEX in several projects, such as the Volkswagen Foundation, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the the Max Planck Society.

The OpenConvert tools convert to TEI or FOLiA from a number of input formats (alto, text, word, HTML, ePub). The tools are available as a Java command line tool, a web service and a web application.The OpenConvert Tools were created by IVDNT in the OpenConvert project. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, the website currently provides two annotation tools: a simple Tokenizer for TEI files and a modern Dutch part of speech tagger.

Title

Nederlab, online laboratory for humanities research on Dutch text collections

Description

The Nederlab project aims to bring together all digitized texts relevant to Dutch national heritage, the history of Dutch language and culture (c. 800 - present) in one user-friendly and tool-enriched open access web interface, allowing scholars to simultaneously search and analyze data from texts spanning the full recorded history of the Netherlands, its language and culture. The project builds on various initiatives: for corpora Nederlab collaborates with the scientific libraries and institutions, for infrastructure with CLARIN (and CLARIAH), for tools with eHumanities programmes such as Catch, IMPACT and CLARIN (TICCL, frog). Nederlab will offer a large number of search options with which researchers can find the occurrence of a particular term in a particular corpus or subcorpus. It'll also offer visualization of search results through line graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs, or scatter graphs. Furthermore, this online lab will offer a large set of tools, like tokenization tools, tools for spelling normalization, PoS-tagging tools, lemmatization tools, a computational historical lexicon and indices. Also, the use of (semi-) automatic syntactic parsing, tools for text mining, data mining and sentiment mining, Named Entity Recognition tools, coreference resolution tools, plagiarism detection tools, paraphrase detection tools and cartographical tools is offered The first version of Nederlab was launched in early 2015, it’ll be expanded until the end of 2017. Nederlab is financed by NWO, KNAW, CLARIAH and CLARIN-NL.

Title

ELAN Multimedia Annotator

Description

ELAN is a professional tool for the creation of complex annotations on video and audio resources. With ELAN a user can add an unlimited number of annotations to audio and/or video streams. An annotation can be a sentence, word or gloss, a comment, translation or a description of any feature observed in the media. Annotations can be created on multiple layers, called tiers. Tiers can be hierarchically interconnected. An annotation can either be time-aligned to the media or it can refer to other existing annotations. The textual content of annotations is always in Unicode and the transcription is stored in an XML format. ELAN provides several different views on the annotations, each view is connected and synchronized to the media playhead. Up to 4 video files can be associated with an annotation document. Each video can be integrated in the main document window or displayed in its own resizable window. ELAN delegates media playback to an existing media framework, like Windows Media Player, QuickTime or JMF (Java Media Framework). As a result a wide variety of audio and video formats is supported and high performance media playback can be achieved. ELAN is written in the Java programming language and the sources are available for non-commercial use. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Title

COBWWWEB: Connections Between Women and Writings Within European Borders

Description

The WomenWriters database includes biographical data on more than 4.000 authors and over 22.000 references to reception data found in sources like the periodical press, early literary history and private correspondences. A significant part of the dataset was collected in the NWO digitizing project The International Reception of Women’s Writing (2004-2007), focusing on authors received in the Netherlands. A second NWO internationalising project called New approaches to European Women’s Writing (2007-2010) and the subsequent COST Action Women Writers in History (2009‐2013) brought together a large international community of scholars and used the Dutch data collection as an example for other colleagues. COBWWWEB enables a connection between the various national projects on this subject into a growing international data network. A virtual research environment on top of this network makes all material from participating data providers accessible for European and interdisciplinary research.

Title

ePistolarium: A Web-based Humanities’ Collaboratory on Correspondences

Description

Circulation of Knowledge and Learned Practices in the 17th-century Dutch Republic (CKCC) investigates the circulation of knowledge in the 17th-century Dutch Republic. A multi-disciplinary project team consisting of historians, literature researchers, linguists and computer scientists works together in this project and created a web-based Humanities’ Collaboratory on Correspondences. This project, is carried out thanks to a NWO Medium investment subsidy and with CLARIN subsidies to make the resources available withing the CLARIN domain. A consortium of Dutch universities and cultural heritage institutions is building a web-based collaboratory (an online space for asynchronous collaboration) around a corpus of 20.000 letters of scholars who lived in the 17th-century Dutch Republic to answer the research question: how did knowledge circulate in the 17th century? Hereto, it will be necessary to analyze this large amount of correspondence systematically. Based on this (extendable) corpus, we will implement a content processing workflow that consists of iterative cycles of conceptual analysis, enrichment with several layers of annotation and visualization. With advice from CLARIN-EU in the first stage of the project a demonstrator was developed which implements techniques of keyword extraction. The second stage consists of evaluating existing more complex tools en techniques that can tackle one or more aspects of the targeted grammatical, content-related, and network complexity analysis, annotation, and visualization. The phase shall identify a set of tools that can be readily utilized in CKCC, as well as tools that need to be adapted or extended to the needs of CKCC; in short, by the end of this phase resources, requirements and risks shall become clear (deadline: December 2010). In the third stage the collaboratory is further developed according to the description in the CKCC project goals, centering around the technique of concept extraction. These three stages constitute the Work Package Analysis Tools, the core of the CKCC project, which was supported by CLARIN-NL. Other Work Packages provide data and software tools needed to create a complete system: the digital corpus of letters (WP6), the editing collaboratory that will contain the letters (WP1), and the archiving environment for data and software (WP2).

AVResearcherXL is a tool for exploring radio and television programme descriptions, television subtitles and general newspaper articles. The interface searches across the catalogue "iMMix" of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and a selection of newspapers of KB Royal Archive of the Netherlands. AVResearcherXL is an extended version of MeRDES, the tool developed in 2012 by the NWO-CATCH project BRIDGE. MeRDES was further developed into AVResearcher by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in 2013. AVResearcherXL is a collaborative project of Centre for Television in Transition (Utrecht University), Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam) and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. The partners worked together with Dispectu for the development of the interface and back-end, and with Frontwise for the styling of the interface.
