CKCC - Scholarly Letters

Summary

The CKCC service is build around a corpus of 20.000 letters of scholars who lived in the 17th-century Dutch Republic. Circulation of Knowledge and Learned Practices in the 17th-century Dutch Republic (CKCC) investigates the circulation of knowledge in the 17th-century Dutch Republic. A multi-disciplinary project team consisting of historians, literature researchers, linguists and computer scientists works together in this project and created a web-based Humanities’ Collaboratory on Correspondences. This project, is carried out thanks to a NWO Medium investment subsidy and with CLARIN subsidies to make the resources available withing the CLARIN domain.

Background

A consortium of Dutch universities and cultural heritage institutions is building a web-based collaboratory (an online space for asynchronous collaboration) around a corpus of 20.000 letters of scholars who lived in the 17th-century Dutch Republic to answer the research question: how did knowledge circulate in the 17th century? Hereto, it will be necessary to analyze this large amount of correspondence systematically. CKCC is a content processing <dfn title="A workflow consists of a sequence of concatenated (connected) steps. Emphasis is on the flow paradigm, where each step follows the precedent without delay or gap and ends just before the subsequent step may begin. This concept is related to non overlapping tasks of single resources.
">workflow</dfn> that consists of iterative cycles of conceptual analysis, enrichment with several layers of annotation and visualization, based on this (extendable) corpus.
With advice from CLARIN-EU in the first stage of the project a demonstrator was developed which implements techniques of keyword extraction. The second stage consists of evaluating existing more complex tools en techniques that can tackle one or more aspects of the targeted grammatical, content-related, and network complexity analysis, annotation, and visualization. The phase shall identify a set of tools that can be readily utilized in CKCC, as well as tools that need to be adapted or extended to the needs of CKCC; in short, by the end of this phase resources, requirements and risks shall become clear.

Arthurian Fiction Data

Arthurian Fiction

Summary

The database consists of linked records on over two hundred texts, more than thousand manuscripts and two hundred persons. Texts which belong to the pseudo-historical tradition of Geoffrey of Monmouth and printed books are not included. The database is work in progress: a considerable number of records have yet to be completed, while fresh discoveries of narratives and manuscripts invite new entries. The compilers of the database hope that this tool will contribute to further research into Arthurian fiction as a pan-European phenomenon.

Background

Arthurian stories constitute one of the most influential genres of western literature, and are studied intensively. Their fictional character made them ideal vehicles for expressing the social concerns and cultural values of their audiences.
The research project ‘Arthurian Fiction: A Pan-European Approach’ (2004-2008), led by Bart Besamusca, resulted in two databases, one describing Arthurian texts and one describing manuscripts written between c. 1150 and c. 1550. The first database consists of features of the ca. 250 stories (data on author, date of composition, patron, language, form and structure of the text, characters, etc). The other focusses on the medieval books in which the Arthurian narratives have survived. In this database, features of ca. 1200 manuscripts were compiled (data on the date of production of the books, language, contents, layout, script, illustrations, owners, etc.). These two File Maker Pro databases were designed to be linked, in order to enable the user to access all available information on an Arthurian manuscript via the entry in the stories database, and vice versa. In this tool both databases have been integrated into one that is available online to scholars. The new database is dynamic: authorized collaborators form all over the world will be able to correct and add records to the database.

LAISEANG

Summary

The LAISEANG corpus contains an unrivaled collection of multimedia materials and written documents from over 50 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea.

Background

The geographical region of insular South East Asia and New Guinea is well-known as an area of mega-biodiversity. Less well-known is the extreme linguistic diversity in this area: over a quarter of the world’s 6000 languages are spoken here. As small minority languages, most of these will cease to be spoken in the coming few generations. The LAISEANG corpus ensures the preservation of unique records of languages and the cultures encapsulated by them in the region. The language resources have been gathered by twenty linguists at, or in collaboration with Dutch universities over the last 40 years, and are compiled and archived in collaboration with The Language Archive (TLA) in Nijmegen. The resulting archive constitutes an unrivaled collection of multimedia materials and written documents from over 50 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea. Through the archive, future speaker communities and researchers are able to plumb the materials for answers to their own questions, even if they do not themselves know the language, and even if the language dies.

EMIT-X

EMIT-X: Early-Modern Image and Text eXchange

Summary

Data and metadata from the Emblem Project Utrecht (EPU) on an experimental OAI data provider, facilitating sharing and re-use. The EPU-project created a collection of 27 books of love emblems. The Emblem Project Utrecht is a partner in the 'Open Emblem' Initiative which coordinates the emblem metadata integration efforts being done in individual emblem digitisation projects.

Background

In the Netherlands, the Emblem Project Utrecht (EPU, supported by NWO/KNAW) created a collection of 27 books of love emblems, a Dutch invention that became very popular all over Europe during the Early-Modern period.
Because of its wide geographical and linguistic dispersion, however, study of the emblem requires access not just to the books of a single national tradition (e.g. the Dutch), but also to the emblem books published in other European countries. As early as 2001 the first symposia were held about the possibilities of creating a single European portal for emblem studies. The Utrecht project has been actively participating in international efforts promoting digital emblem interoperability. For the international Society for Emblem Studies (SES, http://www.emblems.arts.gla.ac.uk/SES/) the subject of digital collections and collection exchange has been a recurrent topic. Among the joint research questions driving these efforts were the need to study emblems comparatively (over national cultures), to trace the transmission of textual and pictorial motifs, and to study the adaptation of foreign emblem books in local contexts. The Open Emblem Group established
by the Society coordinates the efforts.

In EMIT-X two harvestable collections of data were created: the project’s metadata, which describe the emblem’s data structure, harvested for the <dfn title="Component Metadata Infrastructure
See: http://www.clarin.eu/cmdi">CMDI</dfn>, and the projects emblem data (texts of the emblems and associated indexing), harvested by emblem researchers at the OpenEmblem portal and elsewhere. Emblem researchers in the Netherlands and elsewhere are able to search across collections and boundaries. Because EMIT-X also makes available the relevant metadata descriptions in the CLARIN infrastructure, EMIT-X also paved the way for European partner-projects to make their data available in the CLARIN infrastructure. The participation in EMIT-X (at-a-distance) of the international advisory partners guaranteed that the choices made fit within the proposed international collaboration.

Summary

An open source, web-based, user-friendly <dfn title="A workflow consists of a sequence of concatenated (connected) steps. Emphasis is on the flow paradigm, where each step follows the precedent without delay or gap and ends just before the subsequent step may begin. This concept is related to non overlapping tasks of single resources.
">workflow</dfn> from digital images of text to <dfn title="Text Encoding Initiative
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text_Encoding_Initiative">TEI</dfn>, which enables building digital philosophy corpora. This <dfn title="A workflow consists of a sequence of concatenated (connected) steps. Emphasis is on the flow paradigm, where each step follows the precedent without delay or gap and ends just before the subsequent step may begin. This concept is related to non overlapping tasks of single resources.
">workflow</dfn> uses a combination of an OCRopus / Tesseract webservice for text layout analysis and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and a multilingual version of TICCL available as webservice TICCLops.

Background

Philosophy and philosophy-informed intellectual history can profit immensely from teaming up with computer scientists and applying computational methods. A new empirical, datadriven and collaborative computational methodology can scale up our research and help making it more efficient and objective. The tool is able to build appropriate high quality, easily accessible, large-scale corpora of multi-script texts in a sustainable format (<dfn title="Text Encoding Initiative
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text_Encoding_Initiative">TEI</dfn>) which are multi-language and from different historical periods in a reliable, efficient, user-friendly, sustainable and cost-cutting way.

This is demonstrated on a multi-lingual, multi-script corpus of 18th-20th century philosophical texts. This test case corpus contains at least the following books and articles (maybe more will follow):

Wolff (1740) (Latin)

Bolzano (1837) (German)

Frege (1879) (German)

ColTime

ColTime: Collaboration on Time-Based Resources

Summary

An extension of ELAN and ANNEX for the annotation and display of time‐based resources such as audio and video with a referencing and note exchanging system.

Background

Reference to resources is typically only possible at the metadata session level, but not at the level of a time slice of a larger audio-visual document, let alone at the level of individual annotations. ColTime reduces the granularity of unique references from the document level to the annotation level. As a test case, ColTime's developers focused primarily on online and offline sign language corpora containing annotated video files (<dfn title="Eudico Annotation Format. File format used by ELAN.

See: http://www.mpi.nl/tools/elan/EAF_Annotation_Format.pdf">EAF</dfn> document format), but the same technology can be exploited for any type of research that uses audio.
ColTime lead to:

The generation of a link reference to sub‐segments of annotation documents in the online browser ANNEX or the offline annotation tool ELAN; the former including a persistent identifier to a document published in a standard archive, the latter including a reference to a document in for instance a sharable Dropbox environment. Units that will be referred to include plain time slices in the media file, and parts of annotation documents such as tiers and individual annotations.

Standardization of the ANNEX visualization service such that it (a) can process PIDs and part identifiers in a standardized way and (b) can be configured as a persistent service as is appropriate for a service that is to be referenced from publications.

The adaptation of the visualisation service of ANNEX for specific purposes as showing examples and counterexamples side by side.

An online service that allows for the creation, search, and exchange of notes that include the type of links mentioned above. The notes receive ISOcat‐based metadata in terms of properties such as author, date, type, purpose, status, and addressee.

Interaction between the note system and ELAN and ANNEX, so that notes can be created, searched for, and modified from within these tools.

Interaction of the above system with (a) mail and existing social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and (b) cloud services such as Dropbox, so as to allow for collaboration on resources that are not yet archived.

EXILSEA

EXILSEA: Exploiting ISOcat's Language Sections in ELAN and ANNEX

Summary

Enhancements of the multimedia annotation tool ELAN and the accompanying ANNEX browser for users of different languages with the multilingual features of ISOCAT.

Background

The CLARIN data category system ISOcat offers the possibility to create multiple language sections for names, definitions and descriptions of data categories, English being the only obligatory language. The use of these multilingual functions in ISOcat for the creation of multilingual versions of the corpus metadata and annotations will only be a solution if the tools to annotate multimodal data and to visualise those annotations actually exploit the multilingual features. EXILSEA enhances the multimedia annotation tool ELAN and the accompanying ANNEX browser for this purpose.
This new functionality is being demonstrated for the Corpus NGT (for Sign Language of the Netherlands), which is originally glossed, translated, and annotated in Dutch. Its existing <dfn title="ISLE Meta Data Initiative
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMDI">IMDI</dfn> metadata has been updated to CLARIN-standard <dfn title="Component Metadata Infrastructure
See: http://www.clarin.eu/cmdi">CMDI</dfn> descriptions using bilingual ISOcat categories, and has likewise standardised the Controlled Vocabularies in the annotation files by using references to bilingual ISOcat categories.

COBWWWEB

COBWWWEB: Connections Between Women and Writings Within European Borders

Summary

A scholar application for research on the WomenWriters Database and connected databases in women’s literature. The WomenWriters Database contains information on the production of women authors from the middle ages up to c. 1900, and on the reception of their works by contemporaries as well as early literary historians (both men and women). Are concerned: women active as authors in European countries and their (former) colonies. Thus the database allows the study of these women's writing in their international context, and the place to be attributed to them in transnational historiography.

Background

The WomenWriters database includes biographical data on more than 4.000 authors and over 22.000 references to reception data found in sources like the periodical press, early literary history and private correspondences. A significant part of the dataset was collected in the NWO digitizing project The International Reception of Women’s Writing (2004-2007), focusing on authors received in the Netherlands. A second NWO internationalising project called New approaches to European Women’s Writing (2007-2010) and the subsequent COST Action Women Writers in History (2009‐2013) brought together a large international community of scholars and used the Dutch data collection as an example for other colleagues.
COBWWWEB enables a connection between the various national projects on this subject into a growing international data network. A virtual research environment on top of this network makes all material from participating data providers accessible for European and interdisciplinary research.

LESLLA - Low-educated/Illiterate Second Language Learners

Summary

LESLLA was curated by the DCS (delivered in August 2013). More info on the DCS: http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1963.

Background

The LESLLA corpus dates from 2003-2005 and contains speech of 15 low educated learners of Dutch as a second language. The learners are all women. Eight learners have a Turkish background, seven learners have a Moroccan background. From these learners, data were collected over time in three cycles, with an interval of 5 months. In each cycle the participants took part in three types of tasks: (1) production tasks, (2) perception tasks, and (3) a perception task with a metalinguistic component. The production tasks included open elicitation (14,000 utterances), closed completion (4,000 utterances) and imitation (6,000 utterances). Apart from the audio files, the data consist of orthographic transcriptions. For all 15 learners there are also metadata available.

CKCC

CKCC - Scholarly Letters

Summary

Circulation of Knowledge and Learned Practices in the 17th-century Dutch Republic (CKCC) investigates the circulation of knowledge in the 17th-century Dutch Republic. A multi-disciplinary project team consisting of historians, literature researchers, linguists and computer scientists works together in this project and created a web-based Humanities’ Collaboratory on Correspondences. This project, is carried out thanks to a NWO Medium investment subsidy and with CLARIN subsidies to make the resources available withing the CLARIN domain.

NOTE CKCC was superseded by ePistolarium

Based on this (extendable) corpus, we will implement a content processing <dfn title="A workflow consists of a sequence of concatenated (connected) steps. Emphasis is on the flow paradigm, where each step follows the precedent without delay or gap and ends just before the subsequent step may begin. This concept is related to non overlapping tasks of single resources.
">workflow</dfn> that consists of iterative cycles of conceptual analysis, enrichment with several layers of annotation and visualization.
The phase shall identify a set of tools that can be readily utilized in CKCC, as well as tools that need to be adapted or extended to the needs of CKCC; in short, by the end of this phase resources, requirements and risks shall become clear (deadline: December 2010).
In the third stage the collaboratory is further developed according to the description in the CKCC project goals, centering around the technique of concept extraction.
These three stages constitute the Work Package Analysis Tools, the core of the CKCC project, which was supported by CLARIN-NL. Other Work Packages provide data and software tools needed to create a complete system: the digital corpus of letters (WP6), the editing collaboratory that will contain the letters (WP1), and the archiving environment for data and software (WP2).
